Photon — Laser Training & Interactive Shooting Software
Photon is a camera-based laser detection system that turns ordinary hardware into a responsive training and gaming platform.
It tracks laser hits in real time using standard cameras, allowing physical shooting setups to interact directly with software — no proprietary sensors required.
Photon is built for dry fire practice, experimental training systems, and light-gun style games where precision, flexibility, and performance matter.
What Makes Photon Different
Most laser training software depends on specialized hardware or locked-down ecosystems. Photon takes the opposite approach.
Standard cameras, not proprietary sensors
Photon works with common webcams and USB cameras — including the PS3 Eye — making it accessible, affordable, and adaptable to many setups.
High-performance detection on modest hardware
Photon can run laser detection at 60 FPS (320×240) with single-pixel accuracy while using under 1% CPU on typical systems. This allows reliable hit detection without background lag or heavy system load.
Automatic screen detection and calibration
Photon can automatically detect the target screen in the camera feed and calibrate itself, reducing setup time and minimizing manual configuration.
Built for real environments
Photon is designed to work with projectors, TVs, and monitors in real rooms — not idealized lab conditions.
What Photon Can Do Today
-
Detect laser hits using webcams or PS3 Eye cameras
-
Support red and IR laser cartridges
-
Run static targets and moving target demos
-
Track hits on projected or displayed targets
-
Operate at high frame rates with minimal CPU usage
-
Automatically detect and calibrate the target screen
Photon is actively evolving, but its core detection and interaction systems are already stable and usable.
Who Photon Is For
Photon is a good fit if you are interested in:
-
Dry fire practice and home training setups
-
Experimental or DIY shooting systems
-
Light-gun style games and interactive demos
-
Building or modifying your own hardware setups
Photon is not yet a turnkey consumer product or a commercial range system. Some experimentation is expected.
Development Status
Photon has been under continuous development for over a year, with a focus on performance, reliability, and flexibility. The current release represents a stable core system with ongoing improvements to calibration flow, UI clarity, and additional game modes.
Latest build: December 2025
Status: Early Access / Active Development
